Born as Francisca Barbara Craig on February 9, 1966, Paqui is of Spanish descent. She met Brian while he was coaching at Grand Valley State University, and they married in 1994. Paqui's journey with breast cancer began in 2003, when she was first diagnosed after a routine check-up.
