Denver Nuggets earn first NBA championship titlein Game 5 victory over Miami Heat. At Ball Arena in Denver on Monday night, the Denver Nuggets defeated the Miami Heat by a score of 94-89 to win Game 5 of the NBA Finals.
This victory was the Nuggets' first ever NBA title. Nikola Jokić led the way for the Nuggets by scoring a game-high 28 points and grabbing a game-high 16 rebounds. Joki is a two-time NBA MVP.
He told ABC after the game:
It was an amazing effort by the team. It was an ugly game. We couldn’t make shots but at the end, we figured out how to defend.- Nikola Jokić
The Serbian big man was chosen as the Most Valuable Player of the NBA Finals, and he is the first center to win the award named for the late Bill Russell since Shaquille O'Neal of the Lakers in 2002.
The award was established in honor of Bill Russell, who played for the Celtics and died in 2002. Several hours after the game, a mass shooting took place in the downtown area of Denver, where throngs had congregated to celebrate the city's first NBA title. At least nine people were injured in the attack.
Michael Malone, head coach of the Denver Nuggets, praised Jokić as "a great person" after his team's victory in Game 5. Malone noted that Jokić is quickly establishing himself as one of the greatest centers in the history of basketball.
Malone told reporters:
He’s a great husband, father and son and brother. And on the basketball court he has proven time and time again that he’s the best player in the NBA. He’s our MVP, we love him and we’re thankful that he’s wearing a Nuggets’ uniform.- Michael Malone
Jokić, who is 28 years old, had a total of 10 triple-doubles to go beyond Wilt Chamberlain, who had seven, as the player with the most triple-doubles ever in a single playoff run.
According to ESPN Stats & Info, he concluded the postseason as the first player in the history of the NBA to lead all playersin points, rebounds, and assists in a single postseason.
This accomplishment came at the conclusion of the tournament. Michael Porter Jr. of Denver finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds, and Jamal Murray added 14 points to the team's total.
Malone told ABC:
All the hard work, all the sacrifice, all the dedication, all culminated with us winning a championship. But I got news for everybody out there: We’re not satisfied with one. We want more. We want more.- Malone
Miami, who had advanced to the NBA Finals as an eight-seed, was led by Jimmy Butler's 21 points and Bam Adebayo's 20 points. Denver struggled from the free throw line and from 3-point range, but led by as many as seven points in the fourth quarter.
However, the Heat rallied on a 13-5 run and lead by one point, 89-88, with 1:58 remaining in the game.
Denver scored the game's last six points with 91 seconds remaining, thanks to Bruce Brown's putback layup and free throws from Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Brown. Miami struggled to connect as Heat players attempted many 3-pointers.
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said:
There’s no regrets on our end. There’s just sometimes where you get beat, you know, and Denver was the better basketball team in this series. I would say that it will probably rank as our hardest, competitive, most active defensive game of the season, and it still fell short.- Erik Spoelstra
Despite going 5-for-28 on three-pointers (missing 20 of their first 22 tries) and 13-23 at the free throw line, the Nuggets won.
The Nuggets entered the NBA before the 1976-1977 season after spending nine seasons in the American Basketball Association beginning in 1967.

Final Words

On Thursday, the city will organize a parade and celebration for the Nuggets. Denver has previously advanced to the conference finals four times in club history (1978, 1985, 2009, and 2020), losing each time to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Nuggets swept the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals this season.
