India to bid for the 2036 Olympicsand Gujarat is seen as a very likely candidate. According to India's sports minister, the nation is preparing to make a bid for the Olympic Games in 2036 and will lobby for hosting rights at a meeting of the International Olympic Committee in the following year.
The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been investing a lot of money into domestic infrastructure as part of its effort to make India a dominant force on the international sporting scene.
India's Candidate
The world's largest stadium will be built in Modi's home state of Gujarat, which is also India's candidate for the position of Olympic host city. The stadium is scheduled to open in 2020 and will be named after the Indian Prime Minister.
Anurag Thakur, India's Minister of Sports, recently told the newspaper Times of India that now was the "right time" for his nation to make a bid to host the largest sporting event in the world.
Sports minister Anurag Thakur also said in an interview published Wednesday:
“„If India is putting in so much effort to promote sports, I can assure you that we will not only host the Olympics, we will host it in a big way.- Anurag Thakur
Thakur stated that a road map outlining Ahmedabad's path to hosting the Games would be presented at an International Olympic Committee meeting in Mumbai the following September with full support from the government.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has already given Paris, Los Angeles, and Brisbane the rights to host the next three Summer Olympics. If India's bid is successful, the country will become only the fourth Asian nation, after Japan, South Korea, and China, to ever host the Olympic Games.
India's Asian Competitors
South Korea
Mayor Oh Se-hoon stated that he is quietly pursuing the 2036 Olympics. On October 24, 2022, he met with International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach at the IOC headquarters, Olympic House in Lausanne, Switzerland, to promote Seoul's bid to host the Olympics.
He also discussed the city's ongoing 2.1 trillion-won (US $1.46 billion) project to construct a large-scale sports and entertainmentcomplex (Jamsil Sports MICE Complex) in southeastern Seoul, claiming that the complex will be an important facility for the 2036 Olympics. Bach responded that Seoul appears to be ready to host the Olympics, citing his recent trip to Seoul and briefings on the project.
China
Shanghai, Nanjing (host city of the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics), Wuhan, Chengdu, Suzhou, Xi'an, Guangzhou (host city of the 2010 Asian Games), Shenzhen, Xiamen, Zhengzhou, Jinan, and Dalian have all expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Summer Olympics.
Nanjing is the only one of the 12 cities that has previously hosted an Olympic Games, having hosted the Summer Youth Olympics in 2014. China launched the Chengdu-Chongqing joint bid proposal for the Summer Olympics in 2032 or 2036. Pu Hu, a member of the CPPCC Chengdu Committee, submitted a proposal for Chengdu to bid for the 2036 Olympic Games in March 2018.
Indonesia
The Committee Chief of the Indonesian Olympic Committee announced on July 1, 2021, that Indonesia will bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics after failing to secure the 2032 edition in their efforts to become the first South East Asian country to host the Olympics.
Indonesia previously hosted the 2018 Asian Games and was a candidate to host the Summer Olympics in 2032, but lost out to Brisbane, Australia. President Joko Widodo intends to hold the 2036 Olympics in Nusantara, Indonesia's new capital city, on August 3, 2022. In November of the same year, Widodo reaffirmed his country's efforts.
Qatar
There have been discussions with the current president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, regarding the possibility of Doha playing host to the 2036 Games. Doha submitted applications for hosting the Summer Olympics in both 2016 and 2020, but it was not selected for either of those competitions.
Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo each won the right to host the games in their respective years. The 2022 FIFAWorld Cup was held in Qatar, and the 2030 Asian Games will be held there as well.
Final Words
The Commonwealth Games were last held in India in 2010, but the event was marred by widespread accusations of corruption and poor management. Other countries, such as Indonesia, South Korea, and Qatar, have also expressed their interest in participating in the bidding process.
