Carmona, who is 23 years old, scored the game's lone goal to help Spain defeat England and win the championship. According to Reuters, the father of the Real Madrid left-back who passed away on Friday had been battling an illness for a very long time.

The captain wrote on social media:

I know you have been watching me tonight and that you are proud of me. Rest in peace dad.- Olga Carmona

Along with the statement, Carmona sent a photo of herself kissing the winners' medal that she had won. She continued by saying:

And without knowing it, I had my star before the game started. I know that you have given me the strength to achieve something unique.- Olga Carmona

Every time a country takes home the World Cup trophy, the national team crest receives a new honor in the form of a gold star to be placed atop the winner's shirt. In a later statement issued on Monday, she included the following:

I have no words to thank [you for] all your love. Yesterday was the best and the worst day of my life.- Olga Carmona

Carmona was Spain's starting center-back for five of the team's seven matches in the World Cup. According to Relevo, a Spanish media site, her family and friends opted not to inform her so that she could concentrate on the final, and her mother and brothers were expected to be in Australia on Saturday to show their support for her.

Her club, Real Madrid, has also issued a statement expressing its "condolences and affection for Olga, her relatives, and all of her loved ones."

Olga Carmona, who was born in Seville, Andalusia, began her footballcareer at the age of six with Sevilla Este. She joined Sevilla FC's youth squad in 2007, where she would spend the next nine years.

Olga Carmona was a member of the first team in the Segunda División, Spain's second league, for the 2016/17 season.

She led her team to promotion to the Primera División in her maiden season. While her club remained in the league's lower mid-table for the next three seasons, Carmona advanced to the semi-finals of both the 2018/19 and 2019/20 domestic cups, when Sevilla overcame eventual champions Real Sociedad and FC Barcelona.

Olga Carmona joined Real Madrid's newly organized women's footballdivision in the summer of 2020.
